I am working on a paper regarding the impact of charcoal making on the tree density of a mangrove forest and I am hoping if I could relate the mangrove forest area lost against rate of charcoal consumption in the area.
Why not? You can if your sampling is based on the quantitative data/study. Currently, I am working on mangrove.

Hi any systematic sample method will work, just take into consideration the size of the area you want to measure, mangroves tend to be a very homogeneous vegetation, that makes your sampling easier.

You can go for pytosociological analysis of the study area in which a transect can be taken either side of which sufficient number of quadrants (5 x 5 m) may be laid out equidistantly. Density can be computed from the total no. of individuals of all the species and no. of quadrants studied.
