I am currently conducting a study to understand what people share on their Facebook accounts. Given the variety of content being shared in social media, I want to know if anyone has used thematic analysis in social media posts. I have no issues with posts that are text based, or images with text content. What if the user just shared an image? Can a code be applied? If you can share your experience and some useful references It will be highly appreciated.

Codes can be applied on a picture too for exMple the brand name logo punch line endorser all can become codes forthe images that show the ads for the brand

Most of the major qualitative data analysis programs, such as ATLAS.ti, make it easy to apply codes to images, just as you would to text.
Sure you can, as prof. Morgan pointed out, the most commonly used software let you do that. In fact, if you install QDA Miner, one of the examples that are included deals with coding in some paintings.
They absolutely can and in my own social media analysis I've coded textual content, as well as images that people add, and the websites they link to. This is a useful paper (not mine) that looks at coding photographic data, it uses ATLAS.ti but the concepts hold regardless of what software (or no software) you use.
