A group of polar scientists made a startling declaration: "The Arctic as we once knew it is no more" at American Geophysical Union fall meeting in New Orleans. According to NOAA's Arctic Report Card, the average surface air temperature for the year ending September 2017 is the 2nd warmest since 1900 and the Arctic temperatures continue to increase at double the rate of the global temperature increase. . The scientists mentioned that the region (Arctic) is now definitively trending toward an ice-free state with the sea ice cover continuing to be relatively young and thin with older, thicker ice comprising only 21% of the ice cover in 2017 compared to 45% in 1985. And the Arctic tundra is experiencing increased greenness and record permafrost warming. The melting arctic will also release greenhouse gasses that have been trapped in ice for millennia.
