Yes, hence while maintenance of feeder after isolating by breakers, the isolator switch are made open and "grounded" from both end,so danger of casuelity/accident due to back feed could be avoided. some time, in emergency or power shortage, lightening load are supplied by standby generators(AC) with in the capacity limit, with proper isolation of other bus of system .....

Hi Johanno,

Four things, according to me:

The adequate capacity aspect that you have already thought of should be augmented to inclusive of losses! Don't overlook the fact that we are talking of distribution feeders, where losses are likely to be high.

If other load buses are to be provided for, the standby in question should be capable of supplying the combined daily load curve for all the load buses it is expected to provide for - again, together with the losses. (In all probability, the standby has been installed keeping in view the DLC local to it.)

The DLC at different load buses would appear with their respective reactive power overheads, so this should be met as well - with capacitor support or without - depending on the configuration.

The standby should be able to handle the voltage regulation across each of the distribution feeder that it is expected to supply to. Needless to say, these would depend on the DLC's and pf.

Finally, in case some of the load buses have voltage sensitive loads or other loads with tricky features (say arc furnaces, or static loads), then that would require harmonic handling capability from the standby generation facility.

Standby generator can supply power to the load, but operational constraints & equilibrium constraints should not be violated.

So the answer is it's possible but with some cautions. Thanks Sanjoy, Bhupendra, and Mohammed.

I have already mentioned that operational & equilibrium conditions should be satisfied. With these conditions, all points covered what Mr Roy have raised.

The characteristics of distribution systems are
- 1. high R/X ratio ( Distribution systems are operated at low voltage ,so spacing/distance between conductors are kept low as compared to transmission . this leads to low value of X, which means that R/X ratio is more )
- mostly radial connected
- ill-conditioned system

because of all above features line losses in distribution system, voltage drops are more pronounced. In order to over come all these , we go for allocation of Capacitors, Local power generation (small capacity) . but stand by generators can partly meet the load at other buses.as I mentioned above that due to high R/X losses will become more . Hence the very purpose of stand by generators is lost. however stand by generators are used in system restoration process. In power system terminology it is called black-start capability.

Bhupendra correctly says be careful of isolation. In particular:

1. use 3p + N switches to avoid backfeeding through the neutrals

2. Consider break before make switches

3. If multiple switches are used, consider mechanical or electrical interlocks
