I am currently writing my dissertation and want to ask a question about formatting:
Is it acceptable to use footnotes in place of in text citations? The University asks us to use Harvard style... I just find that the name, page, and date in parenthesis detracts from the text.
Any help is appreciated!

Hi Cal,
While writing a dissertation, you must follow your university's preferred format. So if the requirement is to follow Harvard style you'll have to follow that.
While reading scholarly articles you will come across different formats of citation/referencing which might seem distracting in the beginning but eventually you will get used to them.

While strictly following your University guidelines i.e. Harvard Style - you can present In-Text Citations in two formats: (Author Date) / (Author Date, page number) - information focused format: the citation is usually placed at the end of a sentence.
If the citation refers to only part of the sentence, it should be placed at the end of the clause or phrase to which it relates.

Well, it depends, The superscript number 1 is inserted into the document immediately next to the fact, concept, or quotation being cited. If citing more than one reference at the same point, separate the numbers with commas and no spaces between.

According to the citation system you use: In Health Sciences, according to the APA and / or Vancouver system, NO!
Check with the University guidelines and just follow the Harvard referencing style

Journals have specific requirements. Some journals prefer numbers. Others use text. When submitting a manuscript, check the author guidelines of the journal to know which one to use.
