It is long or more than 3 months, if the status of a manuscript is still as "invited editor" or " editor assigned", what does it mean? is the manuscript under review or with editor? is it normal to mail an editor asking to know the status or a manuscript?

Some journals use manuscript tracking systems for their journals if they are based with large publishers and these divide the process into stages - when you log in as an author you are seeing that.
I have worked with a number of journals and processing times vary enormously. It can take more than 3 months to assign reviewers (it usually won't but it can). If the paper is still waiting for reviewers to be assigned you can always write to the journal and ask (politely) if there is a problem.
Two things to remember - reviewing can be a very slow process (reviewers might keep saying they don't have time; they might then be busy and not get to the work). I have had papers take several years to complete the process. It is important to remember that in time sensitive fields it is the date you submitted on (which is why those fields print that) not the date of publication that matters, that you can always withdraw the paper, and that your only real recourse is to withdraw and submit somewhere else.
Polite enquiries and abundant patience are your best course.
The peer review and evaluation process could take a long time. You can write to the editor and politely inquire as to the status of your paper in the procedure.
The peer review process may be long, indeed, but it should be always transparent. Authors are truly entitled to know what's going on with their books and papers. There are also ongoing recommendations to make public all reviewer's reports.
