A classic approach for the synthesis of ZnO nanoparticles is the elaboration of powders by solid and soft chemistry. Solid-state methods are particularly interesting for mass production due to their ease of implementation. However, they do not allow a fine control of the shape and size of the prepared powders. However, soft chemistry allows access to materials of high purity, with perfectly controlled morphologies, at a lower cost. These methods of synthesis from solutions involve fairly low reaction temperatures and are easy to excute.

Polyol synthesis allows the production of ZnO particles of high purity, controlled morphology and with a narrow size distribution. The reaction consists of the hydrolysis of a ZnO precursor at about 160°C-180°C in a polyol solvent. Finally, a condensation step leads to the formation of ZnO. Dear Pierluigi Traverso , dear Artur Braun , to come back to the serious tracks: I personally have a similar discussion currently running. In our case, TiO2 nanoparticles are in the focus of interest, and we are discussing whether or not we should buy the stuff (which is commercially available by several companies in various forms and well-defined size and crystalographic structure), or if we should go by ourselves and prepare the particles e.g. by hydrolysis of Ti-metallocomplexes and a soft heat treatment, like we did a couple of years ago. Doing so, one get to know some kind of craftsmanship which is essential for Masters as well as for PhD-students. However, if time is pressing, what it usually is, then the fast way is to go for some commercial stuff ...
