I am researching in the direction of composite membranes for gas separation membranes, and one question I have is: when doing things like FT-IR, XPS, and TG, is it necessary to cast the membrane layer separately (without the support layer), and will this have an effect on it? I have done FT-IR tests, and some of the effects are not obvious, but when testing for TG, it's not clear to me whether I should remove the support layer or not. It all depends on the technology that you have chosen with or without a support layer. With a support layer, the membrane will be stronger, but this layer can interfere with filtration and contaminate the resulting product, the filtrate. Membrane characterization is secondary.
