hi, I guess you mean the labellum horizontal compared to the stem, right? I've never seen this orchid in the field, but according to the photos (admittedly not that clear) in Mike Taylor's "Revised Illustrated Checklist - Orchids of Chios, Inouses & Psara" (2012) no, it's not always exactly horizontal. Also, I copy from the text: "It is differentiated from O. omegaifera by structural differences and by having a different pollinator" and the author doesn't specifically mention this "horizontality". If you are on iNaturalist you could ask this lady who works on Chios:
Thank you Stefano Doglio a lot, There is no complete description for this Ophrys apollonae even in the publication that was published in. I found a lot of it in my country Lebanon that have the same description and time of blooming and without a V groove at the base but it is sixty 60° angle with the stem.so i want bto publish it but you are saying that it differs in structur wrt omegaifera group. anyway thanks a lot , i am studying this group for more than 10 years and i have a world record Ophrys omegaifera subsp. gharifensis. K. ADDAM & M. BOU-Hamdan. it will be a pleasure for me to join my group on facebook Dr addam lebanese orchids
I'm not in facebook but thanks anyway :-) The book I quoted is more an annotated checklist and there's nothing else. Do try to get in touch with Antonia Aga, or with Mike Taylor, I've realized I've his email: [email protected]
well, I've been only once to Lebanon, last year in late September when it was pretty dry, I'd like to come back sooner or later, possibly in the Spring both for orchids and amphibians ;-)
i am famous between the botanists in Lebanon as the man of orchids and i have four new world records. Try to call me when you come i will help you . you need to tell me which kind you want and i will tell you every thing about it. Stefano. Are you an expert in orchids , because i have a new species of coriophora
i am studying it for years and i have the insects that fill it
eh, it will take some time before I have the chance to come again... I'll be in Tunisia later this month and then Morocco most of March, maybe April...
I'm a member of the Italian "Giros", I know a bit but I wouldn't call myself an "expert" :-)
