At least to my knowledge, no studies about AMD remediation using biofilms -pilot or test scale- have been reported. It is known that biofilms help to remediate water courses with high heavy metal content from historic mine sites. Precipitation of biominerals is the main force behind it.

What puzzles me is the fact that I haven't been able to find an application of this process for AMD remediation, just for waste water or metallurgy applications.

Why is that? Is it complicated to simulate the natural conditions (microbial growth, for instance) at pilot or field scale? Any study out there?

Thanks!
