From my experience in the U.S., history of medicine in the 1800s, 1900s is not emphasized in medical training. Usually, it is given short shrift. Ethics in medicine is emphasized to a much higher degree.

I'd say it is important - without history, we can easily believe that our current knowledge is complete, and we fail to see that so much of our knowledge is still uncertain. New discoveries - not just refinements - are still being made. Canonical verities are being revealed as complete falsehoods, on a par with our (European) ancestors' much-derided "medieval" beliefs - one need only refer to the etiology of ulcers, the role of dietary cholesterol and fat in heart disease, HRT, and so on.

Glenn McGee ( Professor of Bioethics ) wrote in his paper; The Importance of Medical History in Medical Education "The importance of history of medicine cannot be overstated: it shapes every aspect of the West's cultural, political and philosophical commitments. History of medicine is a field that attracts some of the brightest minds in history and sociology of science, and that has literally prevented the repeating of a number of mistakes by policymakers over the past half-century. History of medicine is fascinating in popular discourse, and

when taught well it attracts the attention and concern of medical students like no other area of study."

Psychologically, students are stable when histories are told. History in thir field from the inception to the present moment provides a foundation on which they build their career on. From the history, a good student may predict, with trend of events, the future of his/her field. For medical students and others in other fields, history is important to stabilized them.

In that case, no, I believe lessons in specific areas of medical history can and should be woven in with the practical and theoretical teaching of standard medical subjects. Knowing the history of, for example, microbiology, surgery, biochemistry, physiology, infectious disease, etc. will make students better doctors by giving them a questioning perspective on the 'facts' they are being taught.

I sopuse that we r live in a era with huge developed technology in any aspects and commonly historical approaches and methods have not enough effect on progress in this fild.So i think there is not any strong reason to add new course like that in academic schedule.

Without history, the present medical practice may be carried out in error. So to avoid inherent errors, medical practitioners must be inundated with the medical history
