The chief limitation of correlational studies is the inability to link exposure with disease in particular individuals. A second major limitation is the lack of ability to control for the effects of potential confounding factors.
Of course Diana - it is perfectly correct to hypothesise with correlational studies. There is no limitation if the posed hypothesis is relational - rather than ' cause and effect'. The confounding (extraneous) variables are considered - but cannot be controlled - as there is no control.
