I am currently designing a mixed (i.e. quantitative and qualitative)research approach, which consists of questionnaires followed by semi-structured interviews. The study is explanatory and strives to understand a phenomenon in a deductive approach. My intention of using axial coding is to further explain and validate the relationships of research variables indicated by quantitative results. I appreciate your response, thank you in advance.
Grounded Theory in general is associated with inductive rather than deductive approaches. In particular, analysis in GT begins with "open" or initial coding that does not use predetermined coding categories. After that, axial coding is used in the process of creating more theoretically oriented categories.
In contrast, explanatory sequential designs typically derive well-defined research goals from the initial qualitative results, and then generate hypotheses that address those goals. For this purpose, you might examine thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006) as an alternative approach to qualitative analysis.
Thank you very much for the clarification as usual, David L Morgan . This is quiet relevant reference for my study. I am reading it now. I think I should leave the three phases of coding in GT, because I am merely analyzing qualitative data from a semi-structured interviews.

l agree with responses given so far but it is now a common practice to perform open, exial and selective coding outside the grounded theory. From a pragmatic perspective, you are not wrong to start with apriori codes because your study isn't based on grounded theory

Yes mixed methods is a product of pragmatist paradigm, you have to grasp it basing on ontology, epistemology, rhetoric etc. Mixed methods is the same whether in behavioral science or arts. it is the paradigm/philosophy that determines the questions, methodolog, analysis etc and not vice versa. However, some are still questioning the linkage between mixed methods and pragmatist philosophy
