Yes, it is necessary to define a failure criteria in analysis of compressive behaviour of any material. if you need to simulate the compressive behaviour of concrete material, you can choose linear elastic behaviour..but soil response under different loading condition is nonlinear in nature and need to define failure criteria with respect to various type of soil and drainage condition. In ABAQUS Mohr Coulomb criteria or Drucker - Prager model criteria is used to predict soil behaviour. The compressive behaviour of concrete materials beyond elastic is to be simulated by using Drucker - Prager materials..i suggest you to read ABAQUS scientific manuals for more in details of it..ok all the best..
Thank you so much for your valuable answer, sir I have used elastic and plastic properties and used dynamic explicit solver, in this case, is it necessary? the aluminium material used for a model that have many voids.
AS you have mentioned the aluminium material used for a model have many voids so the response may be a nonlinear in nature..i.e. elsto-plastic in nature..in ABAQUS software Drucker _ Prager model is available. yes, you have to define the failure criteria is elasto-plastic based Drucker - Prager model criteria or Mohr Coulomn model criteria..it is better to use Drcuker - Prager failure criteria for concrete and aluminium..ok all the best..
