A lot of researches which are performed , have no present or future benefit and it is expected to put on library shelfs for ever and no one will open it.
Time is precious; why waste time on a venture that does not yield fruit. Postgraduate research output is supposed to benefit national development; hence, results that are not relevant should not be encouraged.
No. But the question is, who knows what may be beneficial in the future without investigation? Everything must be worked on until it is demonstrated to be of no benefit
There is always benefits from such project, the student learn how to do a research.

It is difficult to foresee which work will be important and valuable in the future. It is like telling somebody" Hey, you have a phenomenal memory for unimportant information..." but at a certain point in time this unimportant information becomes important and useful.
To carry out such research work is simply a wastage of time and money. However few researchers are performing such work for their promotions only, by showing that they have completed so many projects and have published so many research papers.
Simply wastage of time, money and energy. Many scholars work in a project which are not beneficial in the real ground even in the future. They do that only for get promotions.

In my view point it's question of the goal from research. I think even some researcher work for a project no beneficial in the near future it will it's important in the time.
Good question. Sometimes may have to do such projects for reasons related to promotions, student graduation projects or other reasons. However, it is preferable to work with applicable projects.

I think, yes, the theory of Einstein stayed unaccepted until a near time, so the point is any research might be useful in future, who knows.
As said by others,
there is on limit to the research, e.g., in control theory, many techniques have been invented and left behind. currently, they came back to these techniques and used them in a broad of applications.
At the level of Ph.D it is expected that research work and output should be able to shape policies and contribute to presemt and future development. Am sorry to say but anything less than that is not acceptable, tenable and relevant. Why waste precious time and resources on a study that would benefit no one and would not contribute anything tangeable to humanity and would neithershape policies...if it is for the knowledge of research sake then that could be handled at the undergraduates level not a Phd research
I think it's not desirable. We should invest ourtime and knowledge to work in real things that could be of some pupose in the near future. We must contribute to make things better, and collaborate wtih the advancement of science. That's the main reason we decide to enter in a Master or PhD course.
