Hi, I am contemplating on doing a minor in Statistics (three additional graduate level statistics subjects). I am about to enroll in a Master of Science in Microbiology program and had been contemplating on which area to minor- and I have been thinking of statistics as a minor. What do you think? Share your thoughts about it (I have initially thought about medical microbiology or food science, but I thought statistics would cut across different barriers and would therefore have more applications as I personally came from the quality control lab testing of medical devices and pharmaceuticals)
Statistical analysis and microbiology go together.
Surveillance, incidence and prevalence of of any research study or a projest or daily statistical analysis is a must for proving any of our findings
At the end is a matter of what you like to study and research.
If you like epidemiology (the stuff Vijay is suggesting about incidence, prevalence, etc...), choosing statistics is a sure bet. In my case, I find the area..... boring, but well, that's my opinion. If you like more the industry and applied area, maybe food science is not a bad idea. Medical microbiology may be more useful if you want to continue into research.
That being said, nothing is written in stone after your studies, specially if it is a minor. Some people even change to completely different scientific areas of research after finishing their PhD's

Statistics is a necessarty tool in any research field. You are expected to know them even if you don't learn them in universities. You may jump from microbiloggy to forest bilogy or Climate change, statistics follow you like the shoelaces.

Statistics and mathematics are the complementary tools for microbiologist, specially if you do your research on food and industrial microbiology.
