Although I do not agree with this proposal, it is actually true. Those who are not educated, are careless about economic crises, ozone hole, environmental changes, and lack of water, they think day by day.
Reactions to ignorance have been multi-various. Some like Plato believe that it is the root and stem all evil, while others like Orwell and Twain regard it as something useful. However, de Montaigne like you believes that ignorance is the softest pillow a man can rest his head. There is a Persian saying that goes like this: Happy a man who is born a donkey and dies a donkey. Absolute lack of knowledge and a care free life style ,some think, is a key to happy life in today's world.
I don,t think so ,but some times when we feel hopeless we imagine that ignorant people are bliss following ِAbu Al-Alaa poem "When i saw ignorance expanded between people i make my self ignorant till others thought me ignorance
"(ولما رايت الجهل في الناس فاشيا ........تجاهلت حتى ظن اني جاهل"
Many people choose ignorance over knowledge or simply mistake one for the other, creating a matter of opinion from the two, that is 'I believe that, you believe this.' Knowledge becomes a choice between two or more authoritative sources.
Ever argued, with what to you is all-consuming evidence, and the other person appears to be listening with a quarter of their brain, while insisting you are listening with a quarter of yours?
A H. G. Wells' story In the Land of the Blind tells of a sighted man who stumbles into a land of blind people. The title comes from the saying, 'In the land of the blind, the one eyed man is king'. The one eyed man has knowledge no one else there posseses. Unfortunately, the country's blind inhabitants do not accept that such a thing as sightedness exists. He is accused of lying and of heresy, is first ignored, then imprisoned.
One moral of this story: knowledge is what you experience, not what you know.
It is a saying that ignorance is bliss but for any individual who is aware regarding is weakness including his ignorance he should make his own attempts to improve or he should concern a necessary doctor & find out the result of weakness & should himself to try to improve after consultation .
In the present time to remain ignorance is not a healthy practice unless or otherwise a person is mentally retd or having mentally weakness .
It depends on whether bliss has a cognitive component. Can one experience genuine bliss (as opposed to some level of happiness) without possessing cognitive maturity? If the answer is no (as I suspect), then ignorance is not bliss.
I personally feel that I come across this quite oftenin life, though I do agree that it can't be applied to everyone. It is true that some have found bliss in knowlege of this world, but I've noticed that people who persue knowlege are more what I would say are thirsty for it, they want to know more more more. The truth isn't always something to persue or learn about. I have witnessed many that would be happier without the knowlege they have to this day. Some learn negative truths and I'm turn, feel negatively or sometimes want to change it in hopes of it becoming what it's not, positive. What then happens to those who have knowlege of this "truth" that have to live with it? We are all very human, there is very little exception.
RE: “If ignorance is bliss, why aren't there more happy people?”
Because there is a suppressed ceteris paribus qualification. If I am ignorant but the rest of my situation is more or less OK then I ought to be happy. But if I am ignorant and starving, or diseased, or abused, and so on, then bliss may be cancelled out. Or if I am ignorant in certain areas but am aware of (i.e. not ignorant of) that ignorance, then, as Fausto Galetto intimates above, bliss will also be compromised.
The modern society is full of information and, thanks to the spread of smart-phones and others, it has become the world where the latest news are available anywhere.
However, there is a proverb "No news is good news", but mostly bad news such as incidents and disasters.
If you are interested in everything and you want to know the truth, you feel like being touched by yourself and become a suspicion.
Therefore, people who "do not know, do not think" can spend calm and abundantly like Buddha's heart.
Is Ignorance bliss? I really think so. In fact, all children who do not suffer from hunger and who do not live in countries at war, etc., until they become aware of life are happy.
Continuous ignorance is a social disease, that cut parts of our humanity. little ignorance or strategies yes may work but when become a continuous process in our life that is totally refused that against my humanity and religion.
