In Ennore creek in Chennai, TN, India. people engaging for harvesting Polycheates. Near about 400 poor coastal people were collecting for livelihood and each person sold it for Rs 1000/kg for prawn brooders in aquaculture industry. It is mainly a pollution area were discharge of industrial effluents and domestic sewage are mixing and i noticed only one species is dominant in that area. If please any body identified species. I doubted Eunice indica ?
For confirmation it is better to have the upper side view too! more specifically the antennae part! Polychaetes are generally excellent pollution indicators because of their habitat and feeding lifestyles which aids them to bioaccumulate pollutants. Until and unless composition of accumulated "known" metals are known, it would be definitely difficult to say the level of pollution. Agreed Ennore is highly polluted but are there any studies pertaining to heavy metals accumulated in polychaetes? this can be a starting point..
All said and done, polychaetes are yes, the best marine class to be considered as bio-indicators..

Still i dint get the clear cut idea one particular species we are found plenty in one particular area means weather that species will not allowing other sps to grown or any other reason. And we are measuring Ni in that polycheates .
