In sustained release formulations we are interested in a sustained release of API over a finite period of time. Disintegration of sustained release preparation is not desirable, therefore, compendial disintegration testing is beyond the scope of such formulations. 

However, some researchers wish to determine how long their formulation could withstand the mechanical and hydrodynamic stresses in a disintegration test.

Disintegration testing necessary in the evaluation of a hydrophilic polymer in sustained release matrix tablets is not compulsory for normal matrix tablets but when it comes to tablet formulation related to Abuse-Deterrent Opioids, this test is important. So, before reaching any conclusion regarding evaluation parameter you should first confirm about type of formulation you are concerned with.
