I'm not versed enough on design space and DSE, but my academic experience tells me it is not a common method in architectural design, neither professionally or in schools, at least in Spain.
Could you confirm or refute this idea? Bibliography and/or examples would be very much appreciated.
I currently teach a course, albeit an elective course, on design space exploration. While this is not a design studio, I try to emphasize design space exploration in my studio teaching as well. Admittedly, when students do explore the design space, it is not likely to address the entire design but rather an aspect thereof. For me, design space exploration as a means for design offers the students additional knowledge on the possibilities with respect to the aspect under exploration that can aid them to make a better informed decision, even if they do not adopt a specific solution from that design space.
Design space exploration can be achieved through different means, including rule -based systems and parametric-associative systems. Parametric-associative systems find increasing use in design and design teaching. Rule-base systems, aka shape grammars, are/have been explored in teaching at MIT and TU Lisbon, among others:
