Maybe stretching of space described in the 1998 astronomy papers that resulted in the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2011 is not a consequence of a kind of energy at all. Maybe it is something other than energy. Deciding on appropriate nomenclature for what causes the stretching of space requires having a plausible or valid theory of what causes space to stretch in the way observed in 1998. No consensus yet exists for such a theory. What physics has called dark energy since 1998 (Prospects for probing the dark energy, by Dragan Huterer and Michael S. Turner) should be considered for now a provisional name. There are many contending theories. The 2010 book by Vera Wang, Dark Energy, sets out some, and there have been several articles since, including articles by Miao Li et al. One suggestion which so far does not appear to have been much explored (apart from some attempts by me on arXiv and RG) is that what is now called dark energy might be a ratio of lengths that arises from the same energy appearing in two distinct reference frames, one four dimensional and one three dimensional. Is there a better name for dark energy? Should we wait for theory to catch up to observation to arrive at a better name?
