This question arises partly out of the question, Could dark energy revive the cosmological steady state theory? Steven Weinberg in his article The cosmological constant problem, shows that theoretical expectations exceed observational limits by about 120 orders of magnitude. If that is a crisis in cosmological theory, how can cosmology be sure about the Big Bang? Maybe more needs to be known.
