I am working on the androgenic and aphrodisiac properties of the aqueous extract of the flowers of N. lotus, but I know that this plant is a widely spread plant, so I don't understand why no one has conducted studies (except for anti-bacterial properties) on this plant. Well, to the best of knowledge, i think generally aquatic plants do not as much attention as terrestrial plants maybe that is why it seems scanty literature is found on aquatic plants. It is high time we begin to do more research on aquatic plants as well. If you do not get enough information on the web about a material then it should be an eye opener that you too can build information on such material through your research so that others can refer to it
A search for "Nymphaea lotus" on "Google Scholar" will give you "About 5,510 results in 0.05 sec.

Nymphaeaceae roots are used as normal vegetible in the Chinese kitchen. Beside the using of the roots also the juice, seeds and fruits can be used as remedy. The Nymphaeaceae are a powerful dietary foodstuff. The compounds in the roots are analysed as high yield of starch and of ascorbic acid, pyrocatechole, asparagine, B vitamines and some proteines. The properties are for the treatment of stomach dysfunctions, dysenteria, micturition obstruction and against hemorrhage. A using as aphrodisiac is only mentioned in "Lexikon der Liebesmittel" author: Christian Rätsch, Claudia Müller-Ebeling but without a nearer explanation.
tahnk you Ingo, I hae also read that Nymphaeaceae are used to tread cancer in Nigeria and they have been tested (Nymphaea alba) for their genotoxic and anti-genotoxic properties, also they may have very powerful anti-oxydant properties

Thank you for introducing some Chinese culture here. Definitely we eat a lot of aquatic food. But as a Chinese, I think roots in Chinese kitchen that you talk about is more or less the species, Nelumbo nucifera. And it is not in the family of Nymphaeaceae now.

in some literature the Chinese lotus belonged to the family of the nelumbonaceae. But in the German Wikipedia the eatable lotus is also discribed as a nymphaeceae. The literature Chinesische Diätetik and the Materia Medica also named the lotus Nelumbo but the plant family nymphaeceae. The Chinese word is Ou Jie.

You are really correct about the Ou Jie part. But the taxonomy is a little confusing. Because in my opinion, Nympaea and Nelumbo are so different and not in the same family, and we have been taught in this way. Here is one link from Wiki, and a paper recently published about the genome of Nelumbo. You can check those, but still I have to say the whole Latin name thing is easily changing to new evidence. So we do not need to argue about it. In the end, I have to say you make me miss the Chinese food Ou Jie.
