Hello, I am looking for a figure (with reference) that is similar to the one attached (replyfig.png), which compares the day and night side ionospheric electron density profiles typical of mid-latitude. I know the high latitude ionosphere is highly variable (Ne_at_high_*.jpg), but was wondering if perhaps there was something similar from long term averages of day and night data for an instrument located somewhere between 60-80 degrees North latitude. I may look at some EISCAT data otherwise.

I am afraid that in your question in its present form has no answer, because it covers several very different regions with absolutely different properties of the ionosphere. But it is possible to find something if some additional information is known. Do you need this picture for some particular point/region? If so, it is better to give this information. The interval (is it in geographic ot geomagnetic latitudes?) includes sub-auroral, auroral, and polar cap latitudes). For the first and the last region you can use IRI model, but for the auroral zone you have to take into account particle precipitation. So in order to answer your question it is necessary to make it more narrow, i.e. to specify the point and the problem (do you need some average picture, then you can use data for average level of magnetic activity or you are interested in one day, then you can use auroral oval position for this day using, say OVATION model, etc.)

Thank you for your questions N.V. Yagova. To clarify, I am interested in electron density profiles from 0-2000 km, not just a particular region. The idea is to have a visual that compares day and night profiles(perhaps averaged over a few hours, or local noon and midnight for a month. There would be an average (smoothed day and night profile for each station at different latitudes (mid to high latitudes). Geographic or geomagnetic latitudes are fine, as long as it is clear from the source which is being used. A station at sub-auroral, auroral, and polar cap latitudes would be an excellent comparison, but I am not too picky. I suppose IRI would work for a rough comparison, but it is not very reliable above 60 degrees, so I would prefer a comparison from data. I have some EISCAT data for a single station, but am having technical difficulties accessing .mat filed on the Madrigal database at the moment. I will likely make my own figure at some point, but was curious if there was a similar figure published somewhere already so that I may provide an additional reference with my figure for comparison.
Benjamin Wisdom Joshua, Thank you for providing that paper. I will definately use it as a reference for my background section(s) on diurnal and seasonal variation of the peak density and height. It is an excellent comparison of the peak density and height for different times and conditions, but I am interested in the (averaged) electron density profile as a function of altitude and latitude for two times (day and night), not just the peak density.

Please find enclosed a zip file with contains profiles for the Tromso digisonde for a whole day so you can see the evolution of the electron density with respect height. The example day corresponds to January 2nd, 2007. As mentioned:The profiles are observed by the Tromso digisonde (TR169). Each filename is coded as follows: TR169.Y(year)_DOY(day of year)_SS(seconds within the day). The time is in Universal Time and the data format in the file correspond to the density (#/cm^3) and height. Hope this is useful for you to compare the day and night ionospheric electron content distribution in a high latitude station.

I have data for Jicamarca digisonde. Unfortunately not for the day that I provided you before so I have prepare both compressed directories with data from Jicamarca and Tromso respectively for the very same day, 5th of January of 2007. Hope they are useful for you!
Below are some figures you can generate using the RISR-N system in Resolute. Unfortunately, the SNR is pretty low with that ISR, particularly during winter and low solar activity periods. If you were to look at individual profiles, I don't believe you'll be able to distinguish the types of features you want to identify on a figure, such as what you're describing, using this system (See the 30-minute averaged profile examples for January 2011 and June 2013 attached below). Also, you won't get above 1000km with any of the high latitude ISRs. Even Arecibo has a hard time getting that high up.
