I want to implement Ambient intelligence in my research with a prime focus on Smart home automation. Is ambient intelligence is quite same as Context awareness or machine learning? I want to design a system which makes automated decisions based on environment information (data) and user behaviors.
Ambient aware systems are aware of their surrounding and the presence of people. Context aware systems can be location awareness, time of the day awareness or other. If the context is the surrounding, ambient and context aware are the same. However there is no clear distinction in the literature. Machine Learning refers to systems that can learn rules from data without being explicitly programmed. Context aware or ambient systems might be using machine learning, but not necessarily. May I had to the other answers that ambient intelligence is in general broader than context awareness. Ambient intelligence refer to using AI in the context of smart environments (in the broad sense); it includes notion of context awareness, but is not limited to it. Context awareness may be the simple adaptation of a software to the context (as said by the other researcher, time or space). I hope it is helpful.
The term Ambient Intelligence was coined by Aarts and Appelo around 2000 at which time it orginated in Philips HomeLab in the Netherlands. It quickly became a notion in the EU. It basically subsumed many research efforts of european companies and academic institutions that can be compared to those made under the name Ubiquitous Computing, Pervasive Computing, or Calm Computing at the same time in other countries.

Mirko Fetter I believe trying to point the origine of a concept to one group is futile. If you look on Scholar, you will find tons of papers around those years from different part of the world. Ideas often emerge everywhere simultaneously. Not debunking their importance in ambient intelligence, just saying that many other lesser known initiative existed at that same moment elsewhere.
