It is fascinating news for me to hear about the possibility of a self-driving (or sometimes called autonomous) car. It looks like the car drives itself if its driver puts it on "auto pilot" like the one in the airplane.
However, several tragic incidents have been known during test drives of the self-driving car. Do you think that we will see a safe fully self-driving car in the near future? What are the barriers to develop the fully self-driving car?
Another related question is liability issue? Shall a manufacture of a fully self-driving car have a legal liability for the crash?
Finally, is a remotely controlled truck without a driver another possibility? If it is possible, a truck company can save a lot of money for logistic services without hiring drivers.

The self-driving car is a possibility. I would call it automatic, not autonomous, as communication between cars and between cars and infrastructure appears to be a significant part of it. The question is if the self-driving car will be the solution to our traffic problems. Some of the questions that still are to be resolved:
- transition time with automatic and conventional vehicles on the road.
- common (international) standards for communication.
- ownership of data.
- privacy protection.
Probably, ownership of data is the most challenging question. Today, many (all?) modern cars have a data connection to the car manufacturer. Data is transferred to the company and analysed there. When automatic driving becomes a common standard, road authorities will want their share of the data in order to design, monitor and maintain the infrastructure. Of course, the user will have no say in the matter. He will have to waive any privacy protection before he may start the engine.
I indeed believe that there will be a series of self-driving cars in the near future.
As for liability issues, in my opinion, I figures the company of these cars would have a legal liability for the crash.
I believe it is not remotely controlled. Through processing the information gathered by the detection system, it could drive itself.
I would like to add a bit on the "remotely controlled" part, if I may. This article (https://www.technologyreview.com/s/609937/i-rode-in-a-car-in-las-vegas-its-driver-was-in-silicon-valley/) presents a start-up (https://phantom.auto/about/) which employs humans at a remote location to drive its cars - looks like an attempt to aid the self-driving software when it gets confused.
But trucks may operate on full autonomous mode (without any human intervention through remote controllers), as their routes are mainly well-defined, and they hardly have to navigate tricky urban traffic (which is a major challenge for autonomous driving). This can well translate into financial savings as the expenses for the drivers will be reduced significantly, and the transportation time can also be reduced.
Now there are plenty of cars with adaptive cruise control (ACC) technology on the streets, so I think it won’t be that long for the autonomous vehicles to emerge.
Although the algorithm for the autonomous vehicles is still currently in development, 27 states have enacted legislation related to autonomous vehicles in advance.
