In my study, I seek to understand the strategies adopted by Empreva Vale do Rio Doce, in this context. And which of these technologies, can it be said that brought more innovation to it? When we talk about "Industry 4.0", usually we are talking about IoT and computer devices applied in a lack of industries issues.
For sure patents are not synonyms for innovation, but the words are related because when you are in a big industry, and you want to be innovative, you protect the technology you develop with patents.
I used Questel Orbit to generate this IP landscape report and I will notice some insights I had.
1. Vale SA does not research usually with universities. Most of their technology is from itself. It has a lot of one-patent relationships. Nothin deep and nothing long.
2. Most of the technology is protected only in Brazil, and can be used freely in other countries. You protect technology in the markets you want to explore.
3. When we observe the technology overview map, "computer technology", "Digital Communication", and other IoT-like technologies are not frequent. If they are developing Industry 4.0 technologies, it is not protected under patents.
4. They don't have key players;
5. There are 132 dead patents. It means they can be freely used all over the planet.
6. African continent is a natural reservoir of many minerals, but Vale SA doesn't protect its technology there.
I research the determinants of the development and application of one of the key technologies of Industry 4.0, which is Big Data Analytics. I study the possibilities of using Big Data Analytics as part of creating innovative analytical methods, such as conducting analyzes of Internet users' sentiment on a specific issue based on the analysis of a large amount of content of entries, comments, posts, etc. posted on social media portals. Other innovative applications of Industry 4.0, which have been dynamically developing in recent years, include the use of machine learning technologies and artificial intelligence in the field of improving internet communication platforms, internet sales platforms, videoconference platforms, building computerized call-center avatars improving internet consulting and service platforms, in the field of building digital twins in which computerized simulation systems of entire production processes, logistics, offering services, etc. are created, the SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) coronavirus pandemic has accelerated the development and application of innovative Industry 4.0 technologies.
