Teaching is both art and science and there are numerous methods of teaching and learning. More specifically we have teacher-centered approaches and student-centered approaches. Teaching has evolved from the traditional lecture based method to the case based teaching/learning, inquiry based learning/teaching and so on so forth. But according to me, the best method of teaching-learning depends on the context we are operating. There is no one best method that can be adopted in all situations. Effectiveness of a teaching-learning method will depend on the students- their background, topic to be discussed and even the cultural aspects of a particular region. So, in my opinion we need to study the context first to determine the best teaching-learning method.

I agree, it depends on a number of variables/situations. Not every teacher can teach in a way that students will learn from. Because everyone is different and has different ways of thinking about everything, a teacher has to learn about their students and discover the best method they learn in order to teach in that manner. For example, we all know of the different learning styles, and these can assist the teacher to use specific methods in their teaching (kinaesthetic, visual, oral, etc). But I believe it goes further than this. Learning is a natural human trait and if you observe young children, they all learn best when they are playing (which is why early learning centres use play based learning activities in the classroom). If learning is boring, it will not be as easy to learn hence older children and adults find learning harder. If the topic is not relevant to the student, it would be difficult to learn because it will be hard for the student to make a connection to the learning. The teacher needs to understand the students needs, wants, desires (as to what they want to be when they finish school) and try to link the learning to these attributes in a fun, engaging and scaffolding way.
