I enjoy chinese calligraphy,and practice a lot in my spare time since 10 years old. As we all kown,the traditional chinese calligraphy is the art of black and white. This is an attempt and innovation. According to the artistic conception of the work,thereafter dyeing rice papers with colourant(Color,is the most expressive element of art ). More colorful calligraphy works would emerge. Maybe it's a good or bad try,it depends on whether it can meet a wider range of aesthetic taste all over the world. Which do you like better? Any contribution is greatly appreciated.
P.S. The literal meaning of the works below: Live as long as the pine tree and the red-crowned crane. (more colorful work). The sound of Bamboo collision, meanwhile the pine tree's shadow mapping to the ground.(black and white work)

This is, I think, an issue where personal aesthetic taste and cultural / artistic constructs clash.
Traditionally, the artist interprets through calligraphy the deeper meaning of the written saying / proverb. The shape of the brush, the pressure of the stroke, the flow of execution and the way each stroke ends all are integral to the artist’s interpretation. Nothing matters, but the state of mind during the process of writing and the final artwork that is produced should reflect this. Any non-monochrome, light-coloured background detracts and diminishes this.
On the other hand, coloured and textured backgrounds create a wholly different artistic expression, to a degree devaluing the calligraphic essence, but at the same time re-contextualising and re-appropriating it. Maybe, one can consider traditional calligraphy at one end of the spectrum and graphic design at the other. Both are va,lid art forms, but with different ideologies. Where do you want your work to fit?
As an artist, I see no objection to your expanding boundaries. Surely, all that should matter is that you find a way and means to visualise for others what you can see with your mental eye.
On a different note, though, once you add in colour, you need to be mindful that colours may have different meanings in various cultures. Thus the coloured aesthetic that you see and project in your work may not be the aesthetic that a viewer from a different cultural background may perceive.

I named these artwork,the calligraphy artwork with backgound color,abbreviation for CABC. the work step of CABC is,firstly it is write,then dye colors on the rice paper. Obviously,it is difficult to dye colors on a completed artwork,thus the success rate of CABC is very low. I hope that background colors could serve as a foil to the calligraphy artwork. these backgound colors are symbols, and don't constitute a specific things, so it is not a painting. Colors in CABC are just background,they are suitable foils to the calligraphy artwork.
To do these attempts/experiments,in order to arouse all kinds of imagination and association, so as to deepen the understanding of the art of calligraphy artwork.
From now on,I will pay more attention to the differences of aesthetic taste between different cultures.It is color/texture meeting traditional calligraphy, and probably creating a new topic of art criticism in the future.

So colorful artworks. This style indeed deepen the understanding of the art of calligraphy artwork. Dr.Dirk was right, you need to be mindful that colors may have different meanings in various cultures. Expanding boundaries of artwork are opportunities and challenges.

From the works of late Eastern Han Dynasty Bamboo Slips, we can find out clearly the font regular evolution from Li Shu to Kai Shu, so Han Dynasty Bamboo Slips characters is an important research data about the evolution history of chinese characters.

If adding color to calligraphy makes sense FOR YOU, just do it and experiment it
The color should magnify the initial calligraphy or maybe sometime will disturb... experiment and experiment ! you will see
