There are lots of different type of retain structure available to retain soil. Pile-wall retaining wall is one of them. But it's expensive relative to other type of soil retaining system. So, in which case we should provide pile-wall retaining structures ?
The retaining structure made of joint piles is the best when you need stiffness (e.g. deep excavations - to avoid failure surface mobilization) and you do not want to open a large front of excavation (which is the case of embedded walls made of pannels, e.g. 3m wide). For example, a deep excavation next to an existing bulding. In this case you may use joint piles with diameter of 600mm, 800mm or more and you just drill a hole that is protected by casing or slurry and, modeover, resists due to the horizontal arching effect, without dmaging the neighbouring building.
The method is appropriate where the bearing capacity of the soil is poor, requiring deep penetration beyond 3m.
This technique is best utilized when soil adjacent to structure has either :-
1) poor B. C.,
2) deeper excavation is needed for providing space / facilities either below / above G.L. &
3) ground space close to structure is needed for normal / routine work.
Under above conditions only cost can be justified.
Some examples are :-
1 ) in case of Metros / Cities this method is used for the construction of Underground Metro Stations , Underpasses etc.
2) In case of Industrial areas Matreial Handling system tunnels etc.
If hard soils are encountered with depth ,it may be difficult to use sheet piles reaching the required depth of penetration.In this case bored piles (drilled shafts) are used to form a continuous wall to the desired depth
