I am trying to isolate an allkylated imidazole from a mixture containing unreacted 1H-imidazole. The problem is that imidazole is slightly soluble in my targed molecule. Furthermore, I need to work with dry organic solvents (no water).
Alkylated imidazoles are liquid at RT, imidazole has a melting temperature of ~90 C. You can separate them by cooling and washing the solid imidazole with chloroform of hexane.
To reach 100% precipitation is harder to do, depends on the alkyl groups you dealing with, Alkylated imidazoles may also partially/fully dissolve in hexane.
