Labile cells are capable of proliferation and do not live throughout life (they have a fixed life span)
Stable cells are capable of proliferation on demand and live throughout life of an individual if not insulted.
Permanent cells are not capable of proliferation and live throughout life of an individual if not insulted.
Corneal Endothelial cells are not capable of proliferation, some of the cells live throughout life while others die at different intervals of time at their own without being insulted.
From my point of view corneal endothelial cells are not fitting comfortably in any of the categories presently available.
I think corneal endothelia cells are more like a permanent cells by way of analogy in the sense that they don't regenerate but only expand and this affect it's function
Hi Syed, from a purely tissue culture point of view there are only 2 types of cells.
1) Primary cells.
2) Cell lines
1) Primary cells are non-transformed cells isolated from a healthy host and have a limited lifespan and proliferation capacity. As far as I know there are no immortal primary cells
2) Cell lines are transformed cells isolated from a tumor or cells transfected with a virus so they can divide (almost indefinitely).
I think your corneal endos fit comfortably into category 1)
Dear Sadiat, I agree that corneal endothelial cells do not divide and grow and in this way they resemble permanent cells but what about their short life span as several hundred cells die each year in a healthy cornea as a routine biological process. So in this sense they are not fitting in permanent cell variety.
Dear Stefansson, thanks for your answer, It is worth considering, however firstly I am concentrating on in vivo cell behavior and not in vitro cell behavior. Secondly I am not designating permanent cells as immortal cells. I only consider permanent cells to live for the life of the individual.
