Forget the earthquakes, are only a local problem, not worldwide or even country or continent-wide.
I think wars are for the past, people have realized wars hurt everyone, especially the one who starts them. Even slow minds like Trump are quickly realizing it (hopefully).
The ozone layer is a potential danger as its thinning gets beyond control - contrary to what you hear in the news. First it kills the plants (providers of most of our food), then it burns our skin slowly. Consider it took the planet 3 billion years to build the ozone layer and then the "smart" people were created that took them only 50 years to partially destroy it!
Global warming is of course a major killer, because people can only survive under very special air conditions which by now have been altered fundamentally. The continuous pollution of air, water and soil from people who don't realize the damage they do will eventually make it difficult to recover the conditions under which life needs to survive.
Donald Trump provides an excellent example of the human sub-species that have developed with half-used brain. The other half has not been used for too long and has been lost. It is impossible to make such people understand simple science.
The end of life on Earth is something to be faith in one of the coming times. This does not mean we have to wait and wait. For everything has a beginning and an end, including life.
All the scenarios mentioned above will work to damage the Earth, so we must realize how to maintain the natural balance of our earthly planet for humanity, and realize that the night that prevails in part of the earth, is offset by the day in the other part. So instead of looking at the sky at night and wondering what will kill us in the coming days, we must marvel at God's ability to create beautiful nature, and what science offers to serve it.
I agree that earthquakes alone as such are not a credible cause. after all they had been happening all time. Imbalances and injustices may exacerbate wars which can run out of control. If things go nuclear or worse ( taking the possible "progress" of science into account). Destroying the planet earth is unfortunately not an impossible scenario.
Right dear Ali hadi Ghawi, but the answers given by my dear colleagues were perfectly enough and smart. Thanks a lot dear Dr. Isam Issa Omran for your shared information. My opinion in simple words is that the end of life on our beautiful planet earth will always be to ( continuous struggle of the humans to gain energy source and authority). This is referred to in the main question. Best regards.
Dear Luis Daniel Maldonado, I think that your answer did not choose or concentrate on any of the suggestions given. Also it is undetermined i.e. there are no boundary conditions or any limit for your answer. Please refer to the answer given by Michael Issigonsis or any given answer including my opinion , you will be relaxed when reading them as they describe a determined answer. Best regards.
Human’s only enemy is human selves. How will human kill themselves, the best weapon is artificial intelligence. I think artificial intelligence should be called super-er than human artificial intelligence. Today’s artificial intelligence has been more excellent than human intelligence.
As a Christian theist, I don't think life on earth will end. I believe in the transformed or renovated universe and the general resurrection of the dead on this earth once turned into a paradise.
Dear Kirk MacGregor, you are free to bieleve what you want to believe. But your answer holds inside it that real life in its meaning now will be changed i.e. that it will end, yet you didn't give the reason for this change. Best regards.
Artificial intelligence is not a cleverest person’s intelligence. It is innumerable cleverest people’s intelligence. It is growing every time, every day. At the moment, we still can count how many people are contributing their clever to it. So powerful control system, why we just call it artificial intelligence. I think artificial intelligence should be called more super-er than human artificial intelligence. If a bad person adds his bad thought to it, what will happen? Chinese have an old saying: the most powerful will be the king.
Yes dear Munish Kumar, but there must be a Resurrection day where we will be returned after death ( end of life) to be judged by our God (Allah).Best regards.
If life on earth could avoid all the possible causes mentioned in the question, then the last day on Earth would come in the following way as described by Michio Kaku in his book "Physics of the Impossible" (Doubleday, New York, 2008):
"Eventually, billions of years from now, the sky will be on fire. The sun will swell into a raging inferno that will fill up the entire sky, dwarfing everything in the heavens. As temperature s on Earth soar, the oceans will boil and evaporate, leaving a scorched, parched landscape. The mountains will eventually melt and turn liquid, creating lava flows where vibrant cities once stood.
According to the laws of physics, this grim scenario is inevitable. The Earth will eventually die in flames as it is consumed by the sun. This is a law of physics.
This calamity will take place within the next five billion years. On such a cosmic time scale, the rise and fall of human civilizations are but tiny ripples. …"
Thanks a lot dear Tatsuo Tabata for your valuable comments. As I understood most of our religions do describe the end of life exactly as what you commented. I wish that you and me and all my dear colleagues will face our God (Allah) with a white clean heart. Best regards.
Any system is designed for a particular purpose/purposes. Unless knowing the aim of the creation of the universe included with the earth, one could not guess the life of the earth, I suppose. According to a scientific view, there should be some practical criterion based on some measurements in order to predict the life of the earth, apart from available If you believe in religious scriptures, you can find the signs of ending of life on the earth. For example, as you know in Holy Quran such signatures are warned.postulate (The comments are transferred from PM).
Everything written above can only be a nightmare dream
Or described as science fiction.
Indeed, we can hardly imagine what will be on our planet 5 years ahead, but are trying to foresee which catastrophe after billions of years may become most harmful for the Earth.
There is a huge number of unresolved really important for today's life
scientific issues that should be the subjects for discussions at the ResearchGate
You are right in terms of the scientific notion. In addition, everything of in the human life may not be resolved by a scientific tool. There are many examples to recall upon.
The ultimate shelter of the human being is not a scientific shelter but that is something above this horizon. The simplest example is to say when somebody is facing a risk of death, exclaims: Oh God! and never say Oh Science! I know this a very trivial example, but it contains a very simple truth of human life. Millions of years passed by while the mystery of "death" remained as it is and the eternity of the human being and all entities in the universe is not yet achieved via the scientific means!
I suppose the scientific approaches should pay a serious attention to the metaphysics of the human life, as well. Till date, the scientific methods could only speed up the life activities and too in skew directions, resulting in all the turmoils on the earth, killing all morals and righteous human behaviors. REGARDS!
I agree at least with the last passage of your comment.
As to disagreements - the problem in our argument could be (and certainly will be) that at first we have to define the terms... and according to my experience it could take enormous amount of time.
Nonetheless - if I understood you correctly the main danger for humans' survival are the people themselves.
I do not believe that the existence of life on earth will end by guilt of man. I think it will be the earth itself to be completely destroyed for non-human cosmological causes ie not dependent on man (asteroid impact, radiation, star explosion, black hole, etc.). Despite all, man is not so stupid to destroy the life on earth.
The sun will run out the fuel within about 5 billion years, then it will explode completely by destroying the entire solar system. Therefore, at most between 5 billion years, life on earth will surely ending. I can wait to see ... anyone wishing to wait with me is welcome.
In my oppinion none of the causes you give above is able to terminate the human life on Earth. You seem to forget one which is more likely - the big asteroids.
The Chelyabinsk meteor was a superbolide caused by an approximately 20-metre near-Earth asteroid that entered Earth's atmosphere over Russia on 15 February 2013. What it is more interesting, it was not expected, as most people were looking for another big object that came from an opposite direction , but produce no harm. The Chelyabinsk meteor exploded in the atmosphere with a magnitude equivalent to 400 - 500 times the first atomic bomb , causing casualties and property destruction in Russia. It is only one example of the big asteroids which are wandering near the Earth and do not forget that some 50% have unknown trajectories, like the one I cited.
We also should remember that the big extinction of animal life at the end of Cretaceous, that kill the "poor" dinosaurs, was caused by an asteroid of some 10 km height splashing in Central America. Although it was a big extinction among all the animals, some small mammals resembling a mouse escaped unharmed. Nowadays they infested the Earth and they are calling themselves "humans"...
By the way humans will be the motive for the next big extinction, in which some 50% or more of the present species will be lost. I do not know if the human race will be among the animals that will go extinct, but as far as I know from the last 100 years history, it will not be a big loss for the Earth.
We must not mix the ideas of the end of life and the end of human life. We humans have been a powerful predator and destructor, and for sure will harm our planet's life much deeper than we have done so far. Pollution and reduction of habitats will reduce and extinct more species, and in some decades will reduce our hability to deal with our progress. In short: we will self harm our own species. About life on Earth, it will survive for longer, and maybe until the Sun starts it expansion as an older star. Say, over a billion years more. Some other mammal will take our flag in the middle.
Dear Gerardo J. Soto , in other words we can say that GOD the most merciful will (not punish us the humans but will)let us dive deeply in our bad behavior towards nature (environment) and that is the end of human life.
What predator ?? Predators are not killing more than they can eat, so we are not smart enough to be a predator. Pollution and reduction of habitat is done by humans, so , we are in fact the principal cause of the next extinction by the year 50'. As for God I have the impression that he is deeply involved in some other part of the universe , so He cannot take care of us or punish us properly for the time being.
We must stop thinking that we are the single problem of God in the universe, like we have renounce the idea that Earth is the center of universe. This is much simpler, we are on our own and our own acts will speed the extinction of human race, or on the contrary it will save us by some unexpected miracle...made by us. But I am afraid that the day will come soon, when we can no longer make that choice anymore.
On the other hand I have the same opinion as Gerard, some new species will take the flag on Earth , like rats, worms or scorpions and they will carry on the light of civilization maybe more successful than us. At least they will be more adapted to the nukes we will left behind...
Question is highly imaginary & hypothetical. Personally none of the catastrophes mentioned will have the capacity to be the reason for EXTINCTION of Human Llife. In fact it is reported that the life expectancy has increased and the child mortality has decreased. This means that the effect / impact of climate change or any other environmental hazards on human life is so far insignificant. As a precautionary measure it is always advisable to protect our environment from all types of unwanted disturbances or unscientific developmental works.
Surely earthquakes.. even though they are localized events but they can significantly impact other nations like in the case of Nepal earthuakes, the Tsunami 2004. Also There is an increased risk of a future major mega earthquake in an area that straddles the west of Nepal and India.A major earthquake there is already long overdue: the last happened in 1505 and is estimated to have exceeded M8.5. The researchers say the new stress that has moved there could already be adding to the tension that has been building up over five centuries. Any such earthquakes significantly lead to multiple disasters as these areas are highly populated and fragile. A number of Nuclear power Plants are located in Sensitive zones. I think fukushima nuclear disaster was just a trailer.
