The life of a farmer has become very miserable in various countries. How the innovative measures like agri tourism may help the farmers to raise their income.
L. Przezbórska-Skobiej, 2014; Obszary wiejskie i rolnictwo jako źródło dóbr publicznych w agroturystyce; "Problemy Rolnictwa Światowego"; 14(2): 194-202.
Depending upon the context, which should be attractive to tourist in terms of landscape, gastronomy, local history and infrastructure, agri-tourism influences the life of farmes in the following ways:
social: helps keeping young people in rural areas, increases cultural development and social innovation through exchanges with tourusts; improves the health and access to other services (water, energy, etc) in order to keep up the tourists expectations
economic/managerial: integrates the farmers income (catering accomodation), improves the farmers technical, administrative and in general managerial skills, helps differentiating the farm activities making the farm more flexible resilient to adverse market conditions
environmental: improves the landscape, biodiversity, water and air pollution given the necessity to keep the area attractive for tourists
All these three dimensions are interrelated and mutually reinforcing, creating a virtuos cycle of development.
It is of paramount importance that agri-toourism is part of a concerted bottom up development strategy:the farmers willingness to start new initiatives must be accompanied by a local authorities support to developing a favourable context where services and goods needed to valorize the agri-touristic activity are easily accessible.
I might be better to view this in the context of a larger strategy of Amenities-Based Rural Development (ABRD), such as that explained in Nicole Vaugeois' work on a national framework for ABRD developed for Canada.
I am very much agree with this innovative concept. But it can not be developed overnight and everywhere. Definitely it has a charm which should be researched well before designing the whole program.
Active and Interested Farmer can be grouped for this purpose and they should be oriented how to handle the tourists and other important facilities needed for tourist for their comfortable stay in villages.
In India we have so many crops which have a charm in common citizens and theywant to know how these things are cropped such as Kesar, Flowers, Herbs etc.
As a package we should be able to include beautiful locations, cultural events, festivities, local cuisines to eat etc. with Farm sites to be visited. This will add the charm of whole Agri-tourism event.
Two possible benefits: 1) increase the income of the farmers, 2) make this income more stable during the year. It can also be expressed in money through current cost of credit for farmers.
Subsidy and grants for the investment in tourist facilities which farmers will establish are needed.
Agriturism can be an economic activity that if well structured may produce income to people who live in the rural sector. They can have culture tours, gastronomic tours, adventure tours if the place has a spot that can be used for this purpose. Also in those communities they make products derived from what they harvest and can be commercialized. The community as a whole can gatter and make different products and activities that can be used as atraction.
Yes, its a innovative idea, Agriturism can be an economic activity and provide income to people who live in the rural sector. They can have culture tours, gastronomic tours, adventure tours if the place has a spot that can be used for this purpose. Specially in tribal communities they make products derived from what they harvest and can be commercialized. The community as a whole can get and make different products and activities that can be used as attraction as well as eco- friendly.
One of the most important reasons that I have observed during my research is business diversification. This open more sources of income, thus reducing economic/busines risk to market changes/crisis.
Agri-tourism can significantly change the life of a farmers in many ways. I am taking an example of a country like Uganda. Where there are traditional methods of farming and may attract tourists. This can be a significant source of income but at the same time can open an avenue of more government spending in agriculture. As tourist come they may also bring in better methods of farming which may be adopted by farmers. Furthermore, tourists may provide market to farmers products their by giving them direct income.
