I understand that generally in caustic ingestion, upper GI endoscopy should be done within 24 hours. But I also know that interventions that may induce vomiting, like sticking an NG tube down the esophagus, are contraindicated. So how is sticking an endoscope down the esophagus any different? Does it have something to do with the use of sedation in endoscopy?
Hi, there is no more need of endoscopy for caustic ingestion. The management is decided with a CT scan that is performed at 3 to 6 hours from the ingestion.

The difference is the blind aspect of ng insertion wheteas endosocpy should be under direct vision and is useful to suction the stomach, assess the degree of injury and place a tube (NJ) for feeding if deemed appropriate
