I think there's a misunderstanding about science and what it means. Scientific inquiry in no way has to be done in a lab. I know that there's this tendency to drill the scientific method into peoples' heads, but there is no one single method, except for this: you take a theory, which is a potential model of reality, develop an experiment, which is not a physical thing, but simply a collection of independent variables, their set values, and a dependent variable, and generate a hypothesis for the experiment, which is basically just a way to estimate the probability of a given outcome for that dependent variable. So we can take a theory, and develop a survey, and see whether the results of the survey make sense, given the theory. Using that data, we can potentially falsify the theory. And so it is very much a "right type of science."
