Phospholipases A2 (PLA2s) are known to hydrolyze the ester bond of phosphoglycerides at the sn-2 position to release free fatty acid and lysophospholipids.

  • Secretory PLA2s (sPLA2s) form the largest group and comprise a large family - 10 isoenzymes (groups IB, IIA, IIC, IID, IIE, IIF, III, V, X, and XII) that have been identified in mammals.
  • Among sPLA2 isoforms group sPLA2 IIA enzyme has been studied the most, because of its involvement in inflammatory process.
  • Recently discovered isoforms of PLA2 clearly contribute to the release of arachidonic acid, sPLA2 (Type IIA) continues to be a protein of interest in the field of inflammation.

With this background, i wanted to know which will be a better measure - sPLA2 or PLA2-IIA? Whether measuring sPLA2 as a whole or its subtype IIA will give a better picture regarding inflammation?
