I think that much depends on the purpose of research: what exactly is to be under concideration - lexis, syntax, pronunciation/prosody, cognitive categories, style (dialect) etc. If I was to do this, I would pick up one-level language unit (word, phrase, syntagm etc.) and include into the sample only those ones.

Under DISCOURSE ANALYSIS they describe their sampling method as follows: "The Findings section usually includes a clear description of the features or patterns found in the data along with exemplary passages or examples to illustrate these features or patterns. Because discourse analysis normally involves some degree of interpretation, the Discussion and Findings sections are often combined. This is usually the most important part of the article, because the researcher must make a very strong case for the validity of his or her interpretation."
To me, this very much sounds like the sampling (=choice) of relevant text passages is done to substantiate an argument that the researcher has already decided upon beforehand.
Reading systematic review on Discourse analysis will help in comprehending the sampling techniques used
