Dear all,
I would like to study sleep in king penguins and as a part of this I would like to test their arousal threshold. I have come across a few articles that establish this using touch/pressure (Dewasmes et al. 2002). I was wondering whether it would be possible to do something similar but with sound because it will be very difficult to apply touch stimuli in our current set-up.
However, sound will need to be applied at different volume (dB) levels - this could either increase over x time (but then I don't know if the penguins wake because they've been exposed to a sound for an x amount of time or because of the volume), or separately at several volumes (i.e. sound 1 (x kHz) at y dB for z time, but this increases the number of measurements substantially - which increases the 'risk' of habituation).
Does anyone have any experience with this? Any do's and don'ts or recommendations?
Many thanks,
Tessa
