I use a commercial thermal evaporator to deposit aluminium contacts on samples through conveniently located shadow masks. During the process of evaporating aluminium we have found that the baskets get very fragil (in fact, not resusable for a second time), PARTICULARLY when we evaporate at a slow rate (< 1 Angstrom/s), I mean, at low current and for long times, say 200 seconds. In those cases, ususally the basket even breaks during the process. In most cases after opening the chamber we observe a whitish residue. This is not observed when we evaporate other metals, like gold. I do not mention the name of my commercial evaporator because other colleagues using other models and baskets, have found the same problem. Is this an exclusive problem of aluminium? Is it not of sufficient purity?
