I did an online survey and distributed via social media platforms.But did not specify the population but took it as Sri Lankans.384 was the minimal sample size and 480 responded including respondents from various professions.In a conference, if the panel asks how would you generalize the population to Sri lankans,how can i justify my work
Hasanthika C. Adhihetty A sample's representativeness of a population is less about size and more about how the sample was selected (random vs. nonrandom). A nonrandom sample like the one in this study cannot generalize to a population. I would be upfront and honest with the panel that it's a limitation, but it doesn't make the findings any less important. Emphasize what you did find, rather than what you might have found. Something along the lines "of course, it is important that these results are replicated before drawing too strong conclusions" goes a long way.

It depends very much on the subject, as different themes fit differently to on-line surveys. Keep in mind that some sets of people are less accessible to on-line survey. It will possibly make your sample diverge substantially of the population.

It is really difficult and need good control of the bachground chracyeristics. Usually generlaization of the online survery to general population will have risk of bias. Many factors play role in generlization including the exact determination of the study population and the onliner users. There is different resposnse between onliner and offliners for specific questions.

In line with the intention of your research, there is no requirement of generalizing. But you may lookin to develop a micro theory reflecting the views of participants.
Well difficult to consider that this will be a representative sample. This may or may not be representative. Access to the social media platforms may make participation restrictive and may exclude a segment which may not have access to such platforms or does not use these platform. This may create biases. As suggested by others be open to suggestions and highlight the limitations when discussing or presenting the findings...
