Rankings of journals in each subject category are divided into quartiles by both JCR (Web Of Science) and SJR (Scopus). These quartiles rank the journals from highest to lowest based on their impact factor or impact index. There are four quartiles: Q1, Q2, Q3 and Q4.
Moaad - to me this is a useful ranking structure. Using Scimago, for instance, gives the author both the IF listing, in rank order, as well as the Quartile rating. In general, a high IF correlates with a Q.1 ranking - but this is not always the case. Many higher education institutions are favouring the Q-ranking of a journal over the IF - as it is easier to understand and can be presented visually.

Dear Dr. Dean Whitehead. If I am not mistaken, a Journal can belong to different quartiles in different fields. For example in electronics it is Q1, and in telecommunication it is Q2. How can this confusion be handled.
Abubakar - the discipline shouldn't matter. The Q-ranking is based on impact. One might assume that some disciplines are newer or less established than others and so the quartiles rank less. You should be able to find Q2 journals in electronics (they can't all be Q1) and, if there are enough of them, there should be telecommunication journals that rank Q1.
I agree with you Dr. Whitehead the Quartile rating is a useful ranking structure. Just a note about Scimago : it gives the SJR (Scopus) listing in rank order (Not the IF) as well as the Quartile rating :
Q1 is occupied by the top 25% of journals in the list
Q2 is occupied by journals in the 25 to 50% group
Q3 is occupied by journals in the 50 to 75% group
Q4 is occupied by journals in the 75 to 100% group.
For your question Mr. Abubakar, if the journal has several areas of research (miscellaneous), Scimago gives its best quartile. For instance, if the journal is specialized in electronics (Q3), Artificial Intelligence (Q2), and Robotics (Q3) ; you can conclude that its level is high in AI rather than Electronics and Robotics. It influences its H-index and you can intelligently choose this journal to publish a suitable work in electronics (Q3) (if it's your major) better than publish it in a journal that has the best quartile = Q3
I think this new quartile rankings add more diversity and robustness to journal ranking criteria...it's a good addition to measurement tools in use for journal ranking globally.
