Hello all, I have recently joined as an assistant professor in an engineering college. I would like to know that what are the traits, habits and characteristics one should have/develop to grow as an excellent academic researcher? Thank you.
The first thing that comes to mind is:
I admire colleagues who, throughout their (sometimes long) careers, have retained and radiate a genuine enthusiasm for each experiment performed by the students working under their supervision - irrespective of outcome or impact. The awareness that academic research is also, primarily about enabling young people to learn and grow as scientists and as human beings helps a lot, too.

my husband and professor yalcin tuzun that follow him closely at home, he has very long concentration period of working and spontaneous attention. he always quess the results at the begining and measurements without meters.

One trait you want to adopt is to be culturally sensitive to your fellow faculty and students, especially in the online environment. It would make it easier to integrate into your academic environment and be accepted more easily. I think in doing research, a significant trait for the researcher is to have perseverance and a strong will, that is, s/he should never quit despite the difficulties s/he may face. For example, it is possible for the researcher to find out that many things need to be modified and done again after doing a considerable amount of the project. The other important thing for the researcher to do is reading a lot and being open to different ideas.
Qualities: a genuine sense of curiosity and wonder, thirst for discovery, tenacity, open-mindedness to different value systems and cultural norms. At the qualifications level, critical thinking, knowledge management, ability to decompose and synthesize, draw lines and relate content to context. Strong competitive advantages: IT skills, ability to handle data, knowledge of statistical methodology and related software.
