- How can a teacher evaluate the quality of information (the evaluation of quantity is easier to do)?
- Does a teacher target only top or average school students?
With your last two line we arrive to another question - what evaluates a teacher: the student management of acquired knowledge or the student's effort to understand new things?
Yes, self-evaluation is important as the teacher can give his or her side of the evaluation that students and administrators do not see. Things that are important are those issues that impacted learning especially when working with other facilitators in shared delivery of the course. For example, the lead facilitator may post up outdated information on a course and you as a facilitator would have to do some last-minute updating when the course information is posted a day or two before the course unit.
By reflective practices a teacher can do self observation and self evaluation. He can check whether there are defects in in his performance and in class as a whole by being reflective teacher. Critical group discussions, action research, the use of alternative assessment activities, class journals , dairies and so on all these are techniques that can be used by a teacher in this process.
In many European universities, a common assessment programs are highly employed which are named Self-Assessment Program (SAP), so it is very active procedure for evaluation lecturers based on many factors like depending also on students with special already prepared formulas.
I'm sure all teacher will answer yes to this question. But (speaking for myself) in my mind is difficult to deal with the result of a such self-evaluation. So, I try to find some objective index/score to see the progress/regress of my work. Maybe, not the methods are the problem, but the quantification of obtained output after applying these methods.
Is interesting your answer Liqaa. Reading what you write, I remember that some time ago I ask to one of my student to record on camera some lesson. After watching the movie with my lesson, I realized that the lessons where imperfections appeared, were better understood by students. I talked to them about these things, but the results of these discussions I might put them in my research about the teacher's identity. Thank you once more for answering to my question
Indubitably, self- evaluation has subscribed to the belief that teachers need to reflect on the quality of their teaching because it is a powerful technique for improving teaching/ learning achievements and a way for developing professional growth. As such, teachers who are constantly thinking about their practices in the teaching contexts make an intelligent use of self-evaluation to create change, to reach professional excellence , and to personally experience and discover effective standards of teaching. As you have very rightly stated, to be pedagogically effective, the process of self -evaluation should be based on certain factors that are necessary for good learning and for creating reflective and self-directed teachers.
The first and foremost, the teacher involved in self evaluation should know what aspects of teaching s/he should consider in his/her evaluation. Obviously, in this crucial step, they need to focus on factors like content knowledge, quality of instruction, classroom atmosphere, classroom management, and their personal beliefs and professional conduct. It is clear that these factors influence the attainment of course objectives and students' outcomes.
How to perform self-evaluation is the next necessary step in the implementation of the process. In this stage, teachers need to use a solid evidential basis for judging the quality of their practices in the classroom. The following techniques help teachers to access such data:
a) By implementing action research,
b) Through observation techniques
c) Results of tests administered in the class
d ) Students' attitudes revealed through carefully designed questionnaires and interviews
Indeed, sincerity in self-evaluation is the main component, but identifying important things to educate the student (so that we do not overload the student) is a difficult problem.
In Cuba every end of the course teachers have to do a self-evaluation with compulsory questions to be answered. They are among others:
_ Work done in the educational and teaching process: This includes exemplary status and preparation for the work with the students, quality of your teaching, the student´s advancement, elaboration of teaching aids, used of updated literature, tutor of the students, work done as member of examining board.
_ Political and ideological work carried out with the students and results obtained.
_ Methodological work.
_ Research work done: Projects done, participation in conferences, events, publications.
_ Continuous Professional Development: Participation in workshops, postgraduate courses, webinars, training courses.
_ University extension: Extracurricular activities: cultural, sports, students scientific events among others.
Also in Romania teacher make a written self-evaluation.
The problem with this kind of self-evaluation is that it could lead to a formalism. In addition, the fact that someone reads (can read) the written ones, can lead to a form of self-censorship (often the projected image becomes more important than anything else for a teacher). Now I realize that it has to be specific - the question refers to deal with the results of a self-evaluation made in the mind of a teacher. In other words, I'm interested, first, in how to deal with the analysis of the result of an self-evaluation.
While evaluating self, teacher is supposed to see and assess the response and happiness in students or learners. If a teacher can bring smile while learning then the outcome associated with the same is highest factor in assessment of self. Secondly, self satisfaction should come in teacher that only comes when candid delivery is made empowering the students with knowledge acquisition with pragmatic examples.
it is very useful because the best developer of yourself is you.
The best way of doing self-evaluation is to construct a tool based on world best practice that fits your teaching context and keeps updating this tool while you are thriving in the career as a life-long learner.
