I am currently researching microbial growth kinetics through impedance analysis. My experimental procedure involves measuring impedance every hour for a duration of 24 hours. I am seeking guidance on how to effectively interpret and create a Z vs. time plot based on the obtained data. For impedance measurements, I am utilizing PSTrace from Palmsens for Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS). Any insights or recommendations on the interpretation and visualization of the impedance data would be greatly appreciated.

I am not sure if this is going to be helpful, but in my opinion, if you can determine the important parameters in each Nyquist of EIS tests like Rs, Rct, Cdl, mass transfer resistance and ,etc. then you can graph each parameter vs time. in addition, you can use bod and phase diagram that represent Z vs frequency which is a different representation of time.
Here are some tips for effectively analyzing and plotting your time-dependent impedance data from monitoring microbial growth:
- Focus on one characteristic frequency in the impedance spectrum per time point. This could be based on identifying a key feature like phase maximum or low phase angle. Plot the impedance magnitude |Z| at that frequency vs time.
- Alternatively, an approximate resistance can be derived from the low frequency intercept with the real axis on a Nyquist plot for each time point. Plot this intercept value vs time.
- You can also integrate the area under the curve for each full impedance spectrum vs log frequency. This gives a visual representation of total impedance to compare at each time.
- Look at how circuit model parameters like Rct and CPE change over time using appropriate data fitting. The trends in charge transfer resistance and double layer capacitance as functions of time can provide insight into microbial kinetics.
- For concise visualization, a stacked plot overlaying multiple key spectral parameters like |Z| or phase vs log frequency for different time points can help highlight the major time-dependent changes.
