Dear colleagues! Could you recommend books or comprehensive articles on the impact of railway building on African societies? Especially social implications. Both colonial and postcolonial times.
To get a sub-regional perspective of the impacts of Railways and other aspects of colonial-driven developments in the West African sub-region, Elizabeth Isichei's "History of West Africa", chapter on "Colonial Developments" is a good headstart. Of course, UNESCO's General History of Africa gives a more nuanced view that covers all parts of the continent.
