Renewable energy (RE) resources, irrespective of prices, gained popularity based on its low negative impacts on environment. During COVID-19 lock down in the world, despite a slash in the economy, a positive effects has been observed on the environment. The earth is reviving ecologically. Air pollution has drastically reduced in big cities, ozone layer has regenerated. Non renewable sources are still cheaper than RE sources. Will this create a slow trend in RE technologies and their usages?
Although not evidence based, I think the covid-19 crises will have a considerable negative effect on the adoption of renewable energy. This is because the choice to adopt green energy is based on individual economic and to a large scale the government economic capability. This however has been weakened as many people have lost their jobs and government have diverted funds for projects on renewable to fight corona virus.
Since people have noticed that the planet is pollution-free now with the restrictions on movement, this would boost the renewable market tremendously. People would like to continue on without the effects of the dirty fossil fuels we previously used.
It is time for a Clean Earth! Here is your chance, or maybe you prefer the pollution and the cancers?
In my view, what is usually called the economy is actually a measure of the stress we are putting on the earth's ecosystems. Imagine what would happen if all the economies just 'stopped'. The ecosystems would then take over again. So the economy is pushing back on the ecosystems, not supporting them. Pandemics tend to reduce economic activity and so allow ecosystems to start operating again to restore the planet to a more sustainable mode of operation. It will be interesting to see what the effect of ending a pandemic is going to have on all this. I am not hopeful!
COVID-19 has put renewable energy resources on the rise! There will be high booming demand and promising future towards pollution-free environment.

It is far too early to confirm the evolution of Renewable energy production for the next year(s) but for instance during the COVID19 pandemic, even if US Crude Oil prices have collapsed under - 38 USD/barrel. the RE (particularly PV) production in Europe has increased. The decrease of electricity consumption in EU has lead to a reduction of the production of the most costly fossil-fired power plants (gas and coal), and to a much lesser extent that of nuclear power plants. As a consequence, there is an increase in the share of renewable energies in the electricity mix. Thus, on Sunday March 29 the share of renewable energies in electricity production in France was on average 35%! Just incredible…
It is too early to establish a really sound criterion. But relying on the decentralized characteristics of renewable energy sources. I believe that the health, economic, social and political crisis that the world is experiencing today has generated more interest in the market for renewable energy sources. These sources are not subject to geopolitical pressure and are spread across the planet in all its various forms. I'm bothered about the COVID - 19 narratives and the desperate rush for the development and use of vaccine without a whollistic due process
1. the world is yet to understand how the virus affects humans
2. we've engaged in trial and error procedure
3. who is challenged and confused on processes and procedures
4. the virus attacks people in slums and palaces, has no demographic boundaries, amorphous transmission methods etc
5. we must avoid contacts, stay in our places, yet we're opening up businesses and the economy because our support to people we govern is weak compared to spendings on others
we may need a vaccine but it must be safe, efficient with proven data. i acknowledge advances in sciences but timelines cannt be contracted and seriously shortened ; testing takes a long time, humans especially Africans aren't guinea pigs. LETS BE CAREFUL
You have to look on the short term and the long term:
Short term: lower demand for oil products make prices drop (the production is not so flexible that it can follow this sudden demand drop). In the short term these lower oil prices make a more favorable climate for non-renewable sources. However, as prices stay low long enough, some producers might close down some production sites, because they are losing too much money on them. On the long term, this will further increase the prices of oil, certainly when the economy is back to normal and create a more favorable climate for non renewable investments.

It is too early to confirm the evolution of renewable energy production for next year, but with current data in Spain renewable energy has exceeded 47% of electricity production in April. The rise of renewables in Spain together with the decrease in electricity production of 11.8% compared to the same month of 2019, make April the cleanest month in terms of greenhouse gas emissions: 2,154,465.2 tCO2 equivalent, almost half that of ten years ago.
We hope that renewables will be increasingly strengthened to increase decentralized generation and improve the environment, among other things.

For another sectors and other sections of a country, it is similar as residental section. Totaly the energy consumption is increasing.
Supply system is affected due to closing on manufacturing plants for production, and due to lockdown in various forms, demand of electricity itself reducing to a large extent.
Whilst lockdown would seem to reduce electricity demand by commercial and industrial consumers, there shall be an astraunomical increase in demand from the domestic sector. Other sectors that would witness such increases in demand would include healthcare facilities and telecommunications/ ICT facilities. GENERATION plants may yet be stretched and net demand may not fall. Therefore market forces in terms of demand , supply and revenue may be in favour of the energy market
When you talk about markets, you have to consider several forces:
- demand
- offer
- regulations
On the regulatory side, most initiatives are currently blocked, on hold, or low priority. There is some push in Europe to get "eco-bargains" (i.e. OK we help you companies weather this crisis but on the other side you pledge to go green) but this is long term, subject to numerous debates and nothing is certain.
On the Offer side: renewables are long to put on the market, especially large scale projects, so in the short term one is stuck to the existing sources (PV, hydro, wind, methane...), so offer will not significantly increase in the short term in terms of Max Output Capacity. Renewables are usually non-controllable, so you will indeed on the short term see an increase of PV (summer=longer days, more light on average...) but for wind for example no one can say for sure what will be the offer.
On the demand: a part of the demand can be satisfied by renewable, mostly all that is electric. Some can't (planes, trucks, boats some heating...). Currently, we are out of winter in the northern hemisphere, so demand for heating is reduced; planes are on the ground, and transport is down. So potentillay renewables have a huge potential to supply large portion of energy. But most of the time, the consumer doesn't have a choice for renewable or not, this is shaped by the regluations and utilities choices (i.e. cost).
The main problem with renewable is non-controllability. This leads to too much renewables being injected in the grid at some times, and not enough at some other.
The impact of these imbalances is that at the time I write (22nd may 2020 11.10 am french time), the price of the contract on 21.05.2020 for electricity delivered on 22.05.2020 from 14.00 to 17.30 will be NEGATIVE in some market, meaning that the producer will have to pay to put the electricity on the grid (as much as 22£/MWh in England on EPEX intraday 30min GB).
On the other side, when people go home, in the evening, demand peaks, there is less or no PV, and prices soar (same EPEX is 23.6£/MWh at 21.00). There, non renewables still rule, with peaker plants delivering the delta.
So: until renewables find a way to store energy (batteries, molten salt, STEP, concrete blocks, pressurized air, hydrogen, choose your favourite), renewable will always have problems addressing energy needs on the long term, regardless of the current drop in activity. This drop of course makes the coverage better, as there is less need for energy, but also creates overcapacity problems, and is probably transcient, as the economy will start picking up slowly.
The COVID-19 lockdown measures around the world cut global transportation and damage the world economy unprecedentedly. The oil price went negative for the first time in history. Investment in renewable energy (RE) sources has been slowed down due to the price pressure from the fossils. As China had been locked down, the cost reduction of Li-ion batteries is stagnant. In many countries, the government lends a hand in lowering the electricity tariff as the residents are facing the Work From Home situation. These reasons flatten the trends in RE sources.
Due to COVID-19, although the earth is reviving ecologically, due to which the renewable energy sources have gained a great popularity because of its low negative impacts on the climate. But as the usage of Non-renewable energy sources was very less for 2-3 months and technologies for RE is not established to that point, where it would cost less than the Non-renewable sources of energy. More and more people within the framework of pro-ecological awareness, knowing the many negative effects of the development of civilization and the impact of this development on the environment, begin to claim that the mere existence at the top of the pyramid does not ensure human survival in the next thousand years or even the next several dozen years. The increase in environmental pollution, the increasingly dynamic climate change, including the accelerating global warming process causing more and more negative effects, and now also the Coronavirus pandemic, increase the pro-ecological awareness of people. More and more people change their lifestyle to a more pro-ecological, knowing that the development of civilization so far has been successively disturbing the balance in nature. Taking into account the last-mentioned negative effects of the development of civilization, more and more people are beginning to care for the condition of the natural environment. More and more people recognize the importance of the biodiversity of ecosystems, including various forms of flora, fauna, fungi and other forms of life, and the other millions of life forms still existing on planet Earth. There is already an ecological perspective in the general public awareness. People already know that every imbalance in nature causes secondary, side effects, e.g. in the form of epidemics, pest infestations, natural and climate disasters, etc. Man is on the one hand a part of nature and on the other hand a factor which, through external effects, side effects of civilization development, disturbs the balance in nature. In the past, epidemics tended to be local and regional in scope. On the other hand, the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus pandemic (which causes the Covid-19 disease) has quickly become global due to the rapidly growing tourist movement in recent years. In connection with the above, a key issue is the increase in international cooperation in the implementation of research projects and pro-ecological projects, the aim of which is to indicate a high level of importance of sustainable development, including the rehabilitation of civilization degraded areas and the protection of biodiversity of natural ecosystems and the balance in nature, because reducing the scale of biodiversity and environmental sustainability increases the risk of subsequent natural disasters consisting in the more frequent occurrence of pest infestations in farmlands, viral, fungal, bacterial diseases, caused by protozoa and other microorganisms attacking monocultures of agricultural and forest crops, etc., and the increasing risk of epidemics among livestock and among people. It is necessary to increase the general public's knowledge and awareness of this issue. A related area is the need to develop pro-ecological reforms in the energy sector through the development of renewable energy sources in order to reduce the scale of greenhouse gas emissions, slow down the global warming process, the progressive process of unfavorable climate changes, reduce the risk of future weather anomalies and natural disasters (e.g. farmland, forest fires) and thus protect the biodiversity of natural ecosystems and the ecological balance in nature. Due to the increase in greenhouse gas emissions and the increasingly faster global warming process, it is necessary to develop renewable energy sources. However, the question remains: Which types of renewable energy sources should be developed in the future to the greatest extent to increase the potential of electricity production and reduce the risk of energy shortage and the need to diversify energy sources and meet the principles of sustainable development? Thus, the potential impact of the SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) coronavirus pandemic on the possible acceleration of the implementation of the principles of sustainable development into economic processes, the transformation of the traditional excess economy into a sustainable economy of moderation, also known as the green economy and circular economy, including the pro-ecological transformation of the energy sector through the development of renewable energy sources is determined by what formulas will be adopted by the so-called currently implemented Crisis Shields are the key interventionist instruments of anti-crisis socio-economic policy programs, including a soft monetary policy, active budgetary policy and pro-development fiscal policy. Unfortunately, the key priorities chosen in many countries for the aforementioned so-called Anti-crisis shields was mainly to activate economic growth with the use of traditional instruments of socio-economic policy, known and used during previous global economic and financial crises, and to reduce the scale of employment reduction in commercially operating companies and / or creating new jobs in the public institutions sector. At the same time, it was forgotten to launch, based on public funds, programs to accelerate the pro-ecological transformation of the traditional economy based on classical economy and fossil fuel combustion towards a sustainable economy built according to the green economy and circular economy models. Researchers and scientists describing various aspects of the sources and effects of the economic, social, ecological etc. of the 2008 global financial crisis informed about the need to urgently carry out this transformation at least a few years ago. Unfortunately, the suggestions of scientists, important and important for the future of planet Earth and the development of civilization, have been almost completely ignored by decision-makers, advisers who, commissioned by the governments of some developed countries, strategic assumptions of the so-called Anti-crisis shields, thanks to which the economic crisis of 2020 caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus pandemic is to have a limited scale in terms of the level of economic downturn, unemployment, the scale of the decline in economic growth, the decline in production, consumption and investments, however, implemented in the formula of traditional economy and not sustainable development . Apparently they have dominated short-sighted goals instead of long-term ones. For decision-makers, the general social awareness and political support in the perspective of at most a few consecutive years is still a more important issue, instead of the analysis, planning and implementation of a socio-economic policy subordinated to a long-term strategy covering the next at least several dozen years, i.e. taking into account the results of predictive analyzes by climatologists in this planning. suggesting a significant acceleration in the previous and perhaps also subsequent years of unfavorable climate change, including the accelerating global warming process. From what will be implemented from now until around 2030 in terms of implementing ecological innovations in the energy sector, what will be the scale of the transformation of energy based on burning fossil fuels into energy based on the development of renewable energy sources, what will be the scale of transformation of the car industry and land communication infrastructure, etc. towards electromobility, the scale of replacing plastic with biodegradable materials, improving waste sorting techniques and recycling development, developing ecological agriculture, implementing the principles of business and social ethics as well as pro-ecological business responsibility in companies and enterprises operating in various sectors and branches of the ecologically transformed economy, this will depend on the development civilization in the future, living conditions on the planet Earth for subsequent generations, the scale of preserving the biodiversity of natural ecosystems, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and slowing down the global warming and uni the prediction of powerful climate cataclysms and their drastic effects that may appear in several dozen years. The development of renewable energy sources is one of the most important elements of the aforementioned pro-ecological transformation of economic processes towards the creation of a sustainable economy of moderation based on the concept of green economy and circular economy.

COVID-19 could slow the adoption of renewables across developing economies and some emerging market economies that are at once fiscally strained and must prioritize a recovery in the short to medium trends. Advanced economies will, however, continue to decarbonize their economies as the EU and UK have now legislated carbon neutrality by 2050. In other, for the developing economies to prioritize a green energy transition, they must first begin screening investments for high-growth and climate-centric sectors. This will of course require political leadership to unprecedented levels and a gradual convergence between politicians and an increasingly climate-aware electorate. While the economic case for renewables is clearer - with costs dropping by over 45% in the last decade - COVID-19 will cause governments to prioritize recovery over the energy transition. The SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) coronavirus pandemic has resulted in an increase in general social environmental awareness (ecological), increased interest in a healthy lifestyle, increased interest in human relations with nature and the issues of sustainable development and protection of nature and biodiversity of natural ecosystems. At the same time, due to the SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) coronavirus pandemic, greenhouse gas emissions and environmental pollution decreased during the economic lockdown. However, within the applied anti-crisis, interventionist, pro-development socio-economic policies, state aid for enterprises was focused only on the activation of economic processes, economic entities operating in various sectors and branches of the economy. As part of the so-called Anti-crisis shields for printed money, business continuity is maintained despite the shutdown of their real activity during the lockdown period and the scale of the increase in unemployment and decline in consumption has been reduced. The interventionist socio-economic policy applied in this way, instead of using the period of the SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) coronavirus pandemic to accelerate the processes of pro-ecological transformation of the economy towards green economy, only strengthened the continuation of the classical economy development. Therefore, the period of the SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) coronavirus pandemic was not used to significantly increase the scale of the development of renewable energy sources, despite the fact that there was an opportunity to do so. Therefore, the period of the SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) coronavirus pandemic was not used to significantly increase the scale of implementing the principles of sustainable development, social environmental (ecological) responsibility, pro-ecological reforms in implementing eco-innovations in economic processes, including the pro-ecological transformation of the sector etc., and thus the possibility of increasing the scale of the pro-ecological transformation of the traditional brown economy to a sustainable green economy / circular economy was not used. Prior to the start of the Covid-19 crisis, biofuel production and renewable heat consumption were both expected to increase by around 3% in 2020. Like other industries, renewables are exposed to new risks from Covid-19, varying significantly by market sector and technology. After April 2020 onwards, global lockdown measures had reached a peak with over 4.2 billion people, more than half of the global population, being subject to complete or partial lockdowns.
Renewables growth in 2019 was dominated by solar PV, with capacity additions breaking another record to reach 109 GW, slightly lower than the IEA estimate of 114 GW. Due to policy changes, China’s PV additions declined for the second year in a row to 30 GW, a sharper reduction than previously forecast. China’s share of global PV additions declined from a record of 55% in 2017 to less than 30% in 2019. In contrast, other markets such as the United States, the European Union, Brazil and Viet Nam outpaced expectations for PV additions. After a strong 2019, global additions it was expected to hit a record in 2020 before declining in 2021.
There are many stick in the sense of crisis could be observed after the COVID -19 on the market scenario.
1. Delay in the project execution- There may be delay in utility-scale electricity and transport biofuel projects under construction, commissioning delays which depend on the length and severity of confinement measures of COVID-19 thereafter. These can vary by country, state or even city.
2. Can hamper the supply chain- Delays due to supply chain disruptions and/or closure of construction sites have the obvious result of reducing additional short-term capacity additions, with the impacts most likely seen in 2020.
3. Risk- Risk will be increased for investor to invest money in small to medium sized enterprises in renewable energy applications, such as distributed PV, solar thermal water heaters, heat pumps and biomass boilers. These investments run a higher risk of delay or even cancellation compared to large-scale projects.
4. Financial shortage- Moreover, households and small businesses are already facing financial shocks and economic uncertainty may postpone or abandon their plans to install solar PV, solar thermal water heaters or heat pumps on their property.
5. Demand decreasing-
Covid-19 lockdown measures have resulted in weekly electricity demand decreasing by 10-35% across affected regions, increasing the overall share of variable renewables to meet this demand.
6. A consequence may delay projects, which may develop run of the risk of not reaping the benefit of incentives ending in 2020. All lockdown measures and social‑distancing guidelines require companies to follow precautionary safety measures.
7. Renewable heat consumption in industry sees a typical trend after COVID-19, as reduced commercial, industrial and construction activities during lockdown results in a demand shock for most heat-intensive industries, in particular for large bioenergy consumers such as the cement and wood industries.
8. Demand in transport biofuel production plants have idled or reduced their output. In the first quarter of 2020, road transport in regions with lockdowns in place dropped by between 40% and 80% compared with 2019 during the same period.
9. Experience shows that balancing supply and demand during summer can be an increasing challenge, as a growing percentage of demand is served on-site with distributed PV, while generation from utility-scale solar PV and other renewables also increases.
10. However, we hope some positively may influence the outlook, in particular for 2021.
