I'm interested in testing a particular group of cells to see if they exhibit migratory action during development - cell wall projections, movement over time, etc. I'm not necessarily interested in cancer cell migration - I'm primarily interested in normal somatic cell migration. I'm currently exploring markers of cell migration that have been used in the literature and was hoping the community might share a few suggestions.

As far as I am concerned, at least with stem cells, you can trace their movement marking them with Bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) or retrovirus with the GFP gene in its genome, which permits permanent tracing of cells, however retrovirus only infects and BrdU is only incorporated why cells in division (so I don't know if it will help).
You could also try with GFP and a promoter. Depending on the promoter and your luck during the transfection, you can trace cell movement permanently or transiently (depending on the strength of the promoter and if the gene integrates in the cell's genome).

Markers for tissue degradation like MMPs might be of help..although it would be indirectly suggestive of cell migration within the connective tissue.. you can also look into articles studying tumor cell motility..

MR Manwar - I'm interested in general mesenchymal cells during late gestation in mouse.
I'm interested in finding suitable markers that may help reveal whether or not mesenchymal cells are moving or at least stretching before dividing - and I'm also interested in markers that may be related to Vimentin (via some regulatory pathway).
If there are any thoughts on this in particular, I would be very interested to hear them!
