For many yrs that I have been worked with Univ. in Thailand, I found that all univs. in my country put their heavy resource and time to play World Ranking Univ. Still my workplace is far behind from the ranking every year. Once I thought why bother!!! What about best-in class univ.
I have only lectured as a guest of the university, so am not really qualified to respond, but when I have attended a university as a student, what the relevant department had to offer was what made me decide to go there.
I still look at the rankings now, but it is through interest only.
But it will be interesting to read what other respondents think.
I think this not only bothers lecturers but also the other stuff including administrative and non-academic. As per my understanding, there are different ranking methods and not only academic merits are counted but also there are many other categories. I have seen some universities well above the ranks just because of scoring marks from things other than academic merits. This becomes annoying when you keep focusing on ranking. But this comes naturally if you keep focusing on the development of your university according to your mission and vision.
I think does not just bother only the staff of the university but also prospective students. High ranking attracts quality students too! The university is made competitive!

Yes, I am a university lecturer. I am a faculty member of the newly established Kian University as an assistant professor. Because our university is newly established, its ignorance is annoying.
In my opinion, the achievements of the people are much more important. We have very elite people in our group who, because they have studied or taught at an unknown university, cannot get a place to work in the big and important universities of the world.
