Punishment is to get reform in the offender/culprit. If the offence is severe obviously death penalty would be awarded. Not all countries follow death penalty. Statues differ from country to country. So no question of abolition of death penalty.
Without pain imposing punishment is meaningless.

In animals that are sacrificed to feed the human, the law of humanitarian animal protection in these cases, rule that the sacrifice is made without the animal suffering (anguish and pain).
The death penalty in a human being has been tried to be without suffering, like the intravenous injection that instantly produces the death in the majority of the executed ones, but not in all. Occasionally the dose is insufficient for several reasons and in these cases the defendant takes to die in the middle of great sufferings, like pain, sensation of suffocation, etc.
Finally, if the death penalty can not be commuted to life imprisonment, another way of executing it must be found; anesthetizing these people and then applying the lethal injection, for example.

La pena de muerte en un ser humano se ha intentado que sea sin sufrimiento, como la inyección intravenosa que al instante produce la muerte en la mayoría de los ajusticiados, pero no en todos. Ocasionalmente la dosis es insuficiente por varios motivos y en estos casos el reo tarda en morir en medio de grandes sufrimientos, como dolor, sensación de ahogo, etc.
Finalmente si no se logra conmutar la pena de muerte por prisión perpetua, se tendría que encontrar otra manera de ajusticiar; anestesiando a estas personas y luego la aplicación de la inyección letal, por ejemplo.
